Cruises on Serbian rivers are only in their infancy, and those who had the opportunity to experience them recommend them to all their friends. If you have not yet had the chance to see some of the canyons, we suggest 5 cruises in Serbia to which you should come as early as this summer.
Cruising the Djerdap Gorge
The Danube is a river where cruises are widely known and increasingly popular. Cruising routes through the Danube are diverse, there are more and more of them, and can last from one hour to several days. Of all the opportunities, we believe that one must not be skipped if you are a fan of domestic tourism. This is cruising the Danube through the Djerdap Gorge (Iron Gate). Cruising this section is incredible due to powerful environment, because of the knowledge that you are between Serbia and Romania, but also the fact the Danube in this part is perhaps the most beautiful in all its flow. Story of tourist guides you hear while soaking in the nature around them complete the entire impression, and team from portal-guest.com this would rank as one of the most intense experiences of domestic tourism. Sunny day is ideal for this trip because of the refraction of sunlight through their surrounding mountains and the Danube enhances the effect of an unusual scene. However, while cruising the river preserved nature is not the only interesting sight that you will have the opportunity to see. Both from Serbian and Romanian sides are preserved unique traces of historical circumstances that testify about how the Danube was important to the mighty conquerors. We highlight Traian’s Board on the Serbian side as well as the monument Decebals, the largest monument in the wall in Europe, on the Romanian side of the Danube. More about cruising Djerdap can be found here.
Cruising the Upper Danube
Upper Danube is yet to be revealed as one of the jewels of the domestic tourism. Nevertheless, the opportunities are slowly but surely developing, so one of the ways to get acquainted with the UNESCO-protected reservation is certainly to board a boat that will take you to a relaxing cruise. Many would say that the sailing is the right way to meet the Upper Danube at its best. Dense forests, meadows and rich vegetation that rests on the eyes during sailing have here replaced the absence of powerful mountain slopes. Synonymous of Upper Danube region are birds. Some 250 species of birds here have found their habitat, so that during the half hour drive here you can see herons and other birds that you will hardly see any other time in your life. Because of these birds UNESCO has protected the reserve, and this unique species often visit the world's professionals to mark them and review. Strictly protected reserve is an ideal place for those who want a taste of what it looks like the nature that the human hand is not confined, tamed and humiliated. Yet on this cruise you can see and people. In one of the tours it is possible to see Serbian Robinson, who lives on the shores of the Upper Danube region for six months a year because he believes that the nature of man is always better location than the city. There is also some fishermen restaurant with local cuisine typical for this area. Birds are not the only thing you can see on the shore while sipping coffee on the boat. Wild animals are numerous here, most often there are wild boars and deers. The route that starts from Apatin was established a few years ago, and the local organizations are planning several different tours.
Cruising the Uvac Canyon
The largest number of photos from Serbia, when it comes to tourism, are from Uvac. This data is not surprising, considering that the lookout Molitva really provides a powerful view of the meanders which you can not so easy meet in the world. Even though these twisted meanders are the most famous picture from Uvac, this reserve can be introduced from a different perspective, which is not a “bird” one. Cruising Uvac can definitely become the number one reason for foreigners to come to Serbia, because it is a unique feeling. Boat that follows the flow of Uvac will take you next to the most interesting points and you may be in the news and in a mysterious cave that hides the reserve. Wooded mountains that surround water flow will impress you and give excellent contrast leads to the photographs that you've created. Here you have a serious dilemma. Or to forget phones and devices and breathe every moment of the cruise and all that is exposed to your senses, or to try to photo so unreal scenes that will constantly tempt capture lens. And while you are sailing and still taking some photos, griffon vultures will be flying over you, which are normally a trademark of the reserve. Their wingspan of two meters enchant every tourist, and Serbia can boast that it is one of the few rare countries where those birds are tailored to its habitat. Griffon vultures and their nests you will be able to spot if you look closely at the walls that will promote next to you while sailing a boat and every boat driver will tell you all what is most important to know about this species. The boat will at some point lead to the Ice cave (“Ledena pecina”). The site can be accessed only by boat, and a short walk through its halls will complete the experience of this cruise. More about what this reserve contains can be read here.
Cruising the River Drina
Rafting the River Drina is still far better known than its cruising through the canyon, and this possibility is recently more and more interesting to tourists. Especially to those who want to experience this river, but not with adrenalin downhill through its rapids. In previous times this was not possible. Drina on that section was a wild, unpredictable, destabilizing the rafts and forced fishermens to leave. Then the river is tamed and has become one of the great places for a cruise through the calm waters while passengers on the boat can easily observe the blue-green nature that surrounds the river and that you can almost touch by hand. Cruising Drina is specific also because it is a cruise through the two countries. Routes usually start near Perucac, near Bajina Basta, go to Visegrad, and then return to start. So this is a cruise that combines nature, history and art. In Visegrad, visitors usually have time to drink coffee with a view to the famous bridge after which it was named Andric's novel "Bridge on the Drina". Nature that tourists will see and feel during this cruise is hard to describe. Green and ice Drina bordered by powerful nature shows in this canyon in all its beauty. Peace and quiet will contribute to the atmosphere, while you enjoy the experience and drink coffee flock of eagles may fly over you. Some tours through one of the deepest canyons in the world have begun to organize only since last year, and tourism organizations have plans to expand routes and cruises, to be more completed and more comprehensive tour.
Cruising the Ovcar - Kablar Gorge
The cruise will show you the most beautiful face of Zapadna (Western) Morava as it is. Like other cruises we have previously described, this is also relatively new and organized for only a few years. Beautiful scenery while sailing here is also not missing so as stories about cultural - historical significance of this region. During the cruise you will have the opportunity to enjoy the environment of powerful river, but also to hear stories about the sights of the protected area. Your guides will give you all the necessary information about the "Serbian holy mountain" as many now call this place. And during the ride you will see about ten monasteries that makes this complex, as well as some of the mineral water sources. Besides the unique scenery and centuries old monastery fortresses, you will see more interesting objects in the water. There are fishermen’s cottages, which are often beautifully decorated, colorful and perfectly fit into the green frame around them. While sailing you will meet and one steel bridge and a lot of small piers for boats that contribute to the charm of this landscape. Zapadna Morava has its permanent residents so you can see in this water flow white fish, catfish and carp. In addition to such river fund is no wonder that the fishermen here have made their own mini cottages like from a fairytale. All this testifies to the fact that the cruise Ovcar - Kablar Gorge is one of the things that you should try perhaps as early as this summer.
