All the beauty of eastern Serbia cannot be described by one single text. The east of Serbia looks like as it had selfishly took all the best of what nature and history can give. Sprinkled with forests, orchards and vineyards, it hides the most beautiful caves in itself.
The beauty of eastern Serbia cannot be described in a few paragraphs. Villages in this region are full of orchards and vineyards. Routes from one village to another often lead through the forests full of herbs, such is the path from the village Rajac to Rajac cellars, which can be reached in about fifteen minutes drive through the beautiful forest in which enthusiasts pick mushrooms, elderflower and lemon balm leaves. Apart from its vineyards and wine, this region is also known for other gastronomic specialties, such as kacamak, belmuz, beans, roe deer goulash, and nettle soup. When you refresh yourself with these unusual dishes, you can take a tour of all natural and other sights of mystical eastern Serbia.
The caves of eastern Serbia have great potential, as many people say. In Serbia, caves are so many, that not all of them are researched, but the most beautiful ones belong to eastern Serbia. Of course, the most famous of all is one of the oldest caves in our country - Resavska cave, located in the region of the same name - Resava, which is famous for its Waterfall Lisine, also known as Veliki Buk, which is located on the slopes of the Mountain Beljanica. Resava area is also famous for its divine Krupajsko Vrelo and Manasija monastery. Resavska Cave proudly carries its 80 million years long history, and lotions and beautiful cave ornaments of about 45 million years ago. In addition to Resavska, in this area can be toured Lazareva Cave, where 24 species of bats hides, then Dubocka Cave, Prekonocka, Rajkova and others. One of the most beautiful caves – Ceremosnja, that is among the richest caves when it comes to cave formations, and therefore is especially attractive to tourists.
The most famous mountains in this region of our country are certainly mystical Rtanj and Stara Planina with villages in its foothills, which are still the guardians of traditional crafts and unique tradition. Rtanj is naturally covered with pure healing air, preserved nature and plants of which famous savory tea is made. The trump of this mountain are mystical stories which say that wizard is hiding on the mountain and over this mountain it communicates with aliens.
Homolje area of eastern Serbia had spawned many gorges by which it is known today. Gornjacka, Ribarska, gorges of Velika and Mala Tisnica and many others have made this area specific and a favorite among tourists. Special place for tourists is the spring of Mlava river. In Branicevo area you can also visit Pozarevac and Ljubicevo, which invite you to the equestrian games every September. Nearby there is Veliko Gradiste, as well as Silver Lake, the pearl of Danube which is a popular excursion destination for many. When describing Serbian gorges, it should be noted that the most beautiful one is located in eastern Serbia. It is the Iron Gate (Djerdap), longest and largest gorge in Europe. This gorge is a really unusual nature composition made up of four gorges that have settled in the valley. There is a hydroelectric power plant Djerdap, as well as famous artificial lake Djerdap.
In addition to these natural wealth, eastern Serbia in itself proudly preserves wealth of historical architecture. Lepenski Vir, placed in the Iron Gate, is one of the most significant cultural and historical monuments. There are remains of the Trajan's Bridge and Trajan's Board, which further enrich this attractive tourist area.
Some of the most beautiful fortresses in Serbia were built on the ground of eastern Serbia. The Ram fortress, located on the bank of Danube, is one of the oldest in our country, although it is not known exactly who built it or when it was built exactly, but it is quite well preserved. There are also Smederevo fortress and the Golubac fortress, which is considered to be one of the most attractive locations in this part of Serbia.
As if all this is not enough, there are still visible remains of some ancient time, primarily architecture of bygone eras that further adorns this region of our country. Here you can visit the remains of Viminacium, significant Roman military camp, which is located near Kostolac. Felix Romuliana, near Zajecar, is one of the most representative and most complex monuments of Roman court architecture and is under the protection of UNESCO.
In addition to the natural resources in the east of Serbia, there is also a great healing potential in the form of spas. Here are located: Gamzigradska Spa, in the valley of the lower flow of Crni Timok near Zajecar, Brestovacka Spa near Bor and the most famous of them - Sokobanja , located at the foot of the Ozren Mountain and the basin of the Moravica River, which is widely known today and which represents the pioneer of Serbian tourism.
