Caves in Serbia had a historic role and they abound with various types of jewelry, but still most of them have not been fully researched, so we can only assume what is kept in their rooms.
Over 2.000 caves all over Serbia hide their jewelry and historical stories since ancient times. Although only few of them are opened for visitors, and tourists can visit them with an adequate story guide, it is clear that these shelters of prehistoric man represent a great tourism potential. We present you 8 Serbian caves that are opened to visitors and are very beautiful.
Stopica CaveYou walked through Zlatibor at least once, but how many times have you seen a waterfall in a cave? If you have not, you have missed a gem of our popular mountain - Stopica Cave. The cave is located on the northeast side of the mountain and if you want to see this wonder of nature, you can often find very easy to transport to it, since there are organized tours by the guide in the center of the resort. This river cave, which is named after nearby hamlet, amazes tourists and is famous for many reasons. "Bigar bathtubs" are its trademark, caused by the deposition of limestone and have a very distinctive look. In curving patterns, water accumulates cascading down the bathtub. In addition to these tubs which tourists usually take pictures of, there are "dugure" openings in the ceiling, Cup "Psece groblje" ("Dog Cemetery") and the attractive waterfall "Izvor zivota" ("Source of life"). The entrance to the cave, which is 30-40 m high and 18 m wide, is also very impressive.
Ceremosnja CaveCeremosnja Cave is known for its collection of jewelry and lavishly hall "Arena", which resembles the Roman Colosseum. It carries the title of the most beautiful among Serbian caves because of exceptional jewelry, draperies and petrified waterfalls which are rich in its halls. This safe of natural jewelry is located at the foot of the Homolje mountains and there is an asphalt road that leads to it, which means that we do not need a lot of skills to admire it live. It consists of five sections: Entrance Channel, Hall "Arena", Ponorska hall, andesite Hall and South Channel. In the cave there are some eternal hosts: "Mladozenja" ("Groom"), "Dva druga" ("Two friends"), "Lepa Vlajna" ("Fancy Vlajna"), and some of these are also the main decorations. These are of course the formations inside the cave that due to their shape reminiscent of a phenomenon or have a certain symbolism. All these forms are located in the Hall "Arena", where the stone waterfall and a dynamic cave pill named "Na vecnoj strazi"("The Eternal Guard") are located. Caves are usually full of mysteries, including Ceremosnja, that hides a secret of Strugarski stream. This stream enters the cave and then disappears into its abyss. It is interesting that the stream flows in the other cave in the form of spring. It is assumed that between two caves there is an underground system long for several kilometers. The cave is under state protection as a natural resource.
Rajko’s CaveAnother favorite among our caves is certainly Rajko’s Cave located near Majdanpek. The cave decorated with nature jewels, as the popular belief says, still hides some treasures – like the prey of the looted caravans hidden there by Rajko the brigand. Stone hammer, now kept in the Museum in Majdanpek, was found in the entrance of the cave and testifies that this area was inhabited in prehistory. The halls and corridors of Rajko’s Cave abound with highest quality jewelry and unique experience of this cave gives a river of the same name that flows through it. There are numerous decorations and creations that time had made on the walls of the hall, and many of them are in the forms that symbolize masculinity (or the symbolism is in the eye of the watcher). However, this cave which can be reached via paved road is best known for legend about hidden treasure. Rajko, according to some information, was an innkeeper from the 19th century who at night robbed Turkish caravans. It is the popular belief that all the treasures were hidden in the cave, which after him has the name today. Many researchers and papers have passed through the halls of this beauty, but the treasure was never found. Nevertheless, many believe that in some corner there is the hidden treasure waiting to be discovered. Although if you don’t find treasure while visiting the former sanctuary of the famous outlaw Rajko, Egyptian Goddess, Snail, polar bear or crystal forest will get your attention. All these are of course the creations of the cave which for centuries have been its faithful inhabitants.
Risovaca CaveWho wants to go back to time of men’s life during the Ice Age has to go to Arandjelovac, where he will be back in time in Risovaca cave. Unlike their sisters which are hidden in the mountains and foothills of mountains, the forests, this cave is located at the entrance to city of Arandjelovac, which is rare. However, its uniqueness lies in the fact that our ancestors were hiding in its rooms there during the Ice Age. Replica of proto-family regularly welcomes curious tourists, approaching us with experience from the time when the hunters from the families had been hiding precisely in caves like this. Walkers of this natural underworld were also cave lion, buffalo, bear, mammoth and leopard, whose fossil remains were found at the site. It is estimated that these animals were walking around during the last, 4th ice age, and that these remains are old about a hundred thousand years. Risovaca cave is therefore one of the most unusual museums, which stands at the entrance in Arandjelovac always ready for new tourists.
Potpecka CaveThe cave built by the water is known for its majestic entrance in the shape of a horseshoe. Potpecka Cave near Uzice is perhaps one of the most interesting for its "architecture". It is interesting that it was built by a water underground streams that sink in Dreznicka valley and after underground stream, which is 4-5 km long (in a straight line), emerge from the caves or springs in front of the cave and build Petnica – a cave river. The two main sections of this beauty of nature are the Upper and Lower cave whose walls are decorated with rare cave formations. And this cave is the habitat of some of our distant ancestor. Studies have found that the shelter in its halls found the man from the time of the Neolithic period. Very compelling evidence speaks in favor of this, like an abundance of ceramics, processed deer antlers and stone weapons which are found there. The residents of this cave certainly knew to use its natural advantages, as the researchers say.
Lazar’s CaveLazar’s cave or Zlotska Cave is also known as an archaeological site. Inside of it were found remains of three different time periods: bronze, copper and iron age, and fossils prove that in this cave once walked cave lion, cave bear and cave hyena. Throughout history this cave has changed its position and was a hunting station in the Bronze Age, while during the Iron Age was the center of metallurgy. The mountain is located in the foothills of Kucaj near Bor, as the one of the largest complex of caves in Serbia - with a total length of about 8,000 meters. Lazar's cave is from 2005 under the state protection as a natural resource, and is located near the monument of nature Lazar’s canyon.
Uvac Ledena CaveNature Reserve Uvac is almost inevitable when it comes to our natural resources, and also has to be mentioned when we talk about our richest caves. Near lake Uvac, Uvac cave system exists, and for tourists there is recently provided Ledena Cave (Ice Cave), which is named after the fact that the temperature in it is constant - eight degrees. In this ice beauty only recently the paths have been made so that tourists who enjoy the canyon can sink and see its impressive jewelry. Blessed Ice Cave is available to a small number of visitors, because it can be seen currently only by driving in boat on Uvac Lake and climbing the metal stairs on a steep bank of the lake. The boat is provided for visitors. While the cave wasn’t secured the most skilled and yet not the most honest visitors came to it in order to steal and destroy the jewelry. In order to preserve the treasure on cave entrance was built metal grille. Tour of beautiful Ice cave is possible only with guards, because in some parts vaults are narrow and low less than a meter.
Resava CaveResava Cave is one of the oldest in our country, considering that it is over 80 million years old. About 20 km away from Despotovac, around Gornja Resava is located one of the most attractive caves that wasn’t discovered by scientists until the 1960s, although the sheperds from the surrounding villages knew about it because they used to hide just in a place that is now a delicacy among the lovers of our nature. Resava cave certainly has much to offer to visitors who want to see what nature can create and preserve for millions of years. The cave formations, draperies and petrified waterfalls are hosts in lavish halls, and therefore, should be visited at least once. The four halls, which began to form even before the ice age, have jewelry and attributes which hold the attention of visitors. One-way concrete path goes from one to another and does not return by the same route. "Hall of joined columns, or colonnades" ("Dvorana sraslih stubova ili kolonada") is the first set foot in which tourists can watch the pillars merged with the ceiling. "Hall of hives" (“Dvorana kosnica”) is the second in Resava cave and its jewelry has yellow color which is still being formed. "The lobby of history" ("Predvorje istorije") is a hall where a stone ax, spear-heads, skulls arctic fox and a prehistoric human fireplace were found. "Crystal Hall" ("Kristalna dvorana") is known for its impressive cave formations. If you go to this hall put some clothing on as the temperature is only 7 degrees. Old beauty which is created in the limestone hill of Babina Glava is under state protection as a natural monument.
