One of the most recognizable images of Serbia is precisely this viewpoint from which you can enjoy powerful view of the unique meanders of Uvac River Gorge. Viewpoint is best to reach on foot from Krstac site along the coast of Uvac. The road to the viewponit Molitva (Prayer) is about 6 kilometers long. When after an hour and a half or two arrive at your destination you will realize that photos are not remastered, and meanders of Uvac are really the most remarkable scene in Serbia. The alternative is to go with the Rangers in jeeps. In this powerful meanders of the river Uvac, the limestone rocks deeply notch its strength. Thus, formed perhaps the most famous limestone valleys of our country. The average depth of the valley is between 200 and 300 meters. Uvac is surrounded by mountains Zlatar, Murtenica, Cemernica, Jadovnik and Javor, and about two-thirds of the territory of the reserve is located in the municipality of Nova Varos. Griffon vulture is another very important reason to come to one of the viewpoints of nature reserve Uvac. Griffon vulture is of course a vulture species, and what makes it so powerful, except for its color and a wingspan that reaches up to three meters, is the fact that the griffon vulture was a model when discussing some aircraft. Near the dam is feeding place for griffon vulture, which looks spectacular when the rangers bring them food. In addition to the house of powerplant is located an aviary in rehabilitation, which can also be visited with the rangers. This rare species was threatened with extinction after the World War II, but the local citizens in cooperation with biologists managed to save them. Now the canyon Uvac is the biggest habitat of griffon vultures in the Balkans and is among the biggest in Europe. The role of griffon vulture in nature is very important because it feeds on dead animals, which means that they prevent the spread of infection.
Caves of the Uvac
You've all heard of the famous meanders of Uvac, but how much do you know about the beautiful caves of Uvac? This reserve is the largest so far known cave system in Serbia. It consists of two caves and pits. Usacka cave, Ice (Ledena) cave and Bezdana are connected to each other with channels and make this unique system, which has a total of four inputs. Usacka cave has a channel through which sometimes runs Deep Creek. Her wealth is abundance of cave ornaments. Halls of Ice cave are also rich in jewelery, and a large number of travertine terraces also makes it special. You can go through caves on foot without special equipment with good lighting, the entire system is approximately 6 kilometers long. Besides this cave system there are some other caves in this nature reserve. Tubic cave is located in the village of Tubici 5km far from Sjenica. Cave ornaments decorate the halls of this place, but one part is flooded so it can be entered only by boat. Bazdarska cave is located 10 kilometers from Sjenica and is also decorated with an abundance of cave ornaments.
The rich flora and fauna
In addition to griffon vultures in this place have returned two types of eagles, vultures that previously had completely disappeared. Cameras and photos at feeding place during the past few years recorded the black vulture and white scavenger vulture. Park rangers are hoping that reserve Uvac in the coming years will become their permanent habitat. Otherwise Reserve is a natural habitat for many other birds: white-tailed eagle, golden eagle, eagle, buzzard, short-toed eagle, as well as for numerous species of hawks and owls. However, Uvac is not only a favorite place for birds. Due to the fineness of water diverse types of fish swim here. Unpolluted, clean flow of water made reserve favorite to as much as 24 species of fish including perch, chub, trout skobalja, cataracts and many others. Here does not end the richness of animal background of Uvac reserve. During the walk you have to be careful, because the walls of Uvac hide snakes. A nature here is also excellent for rabbits, foxes, bears and martens.
Cruise on the Uvac
Hiking is always a good way to get to know a place and to feel a little physical activity. However, exploring Uvac from the boat is certainly a special experience. Cruising Uvac or Sjenica Lake is extremely popular, and for good reason. The tour starts at 8 kilometers from Nova Varos and passes around 12-13 kilometers of the lake. Visitors during the cruise have the opportunity to see griffon vultures, or to navigate through the rich Ice Cave. The entire tour lasts three to four hours. Those who want to feel the experience, but would like to walk through reserve also have the option of organized tours that combine cruising and walking. Part time visitors can go on a boat from which they can observe griffon vultures, and then go on foot to the viewpoint Big Top (Veliki vrh), which offers one of the most powerful views of the Uvac. Then again cruise returns back. This tour will take a little longer, since it takes five to six hours.
