Beauty of nature
The first association on rivers in Serbia are mostly the Danube, Sava, Morava and Drina lately. However, some areas, especially mountain ones, are rich in rivers whose beauty could surpass above-mentioned.
These rivers are generally known to the local population, and few people know that the fairytale-like scenes are right there. One of the cleanest rivers in Europe is also one of the shortest in the world. If went hiking trails, persistent photographer would probably discover dozens of hidden, beautiful rivers. In the following pages we present to you the four rivers that are among the most beautiful in Serbia.
Did you know that one of the cleanest rivers of Europe flows through Serbia? River Gradac, despite factors that threaten to undermine its suburbs, managed to maintain this epithet. Although much cleaner than the much more popular Danube, River Gradac has not yet arrived at the map of locations that are well worth seeing for domestic tourists. Gradac springs below the mountain Povlen, and continues its path to the Kolubara into which it flows. It runs near the village of Bogatic and monastery Celije and makes its gorge, which is the phenomenon for itself. What you can see by walking near the mountain and the river? You can relax on one of the beaches, or drink coffee in one of the cafes, and look at watermill with the environment in ethno style, so when you are already in nature also go a bit back through history. You will meet here otter and many different animal species. Such clear water is ideal habitat for skip and water snake, and they are in company with river crawfish and white turtle. The canyon of the river Gradac is over 22 km long and consists of two parts, upper and lower. The lower part ends almost in the center of Valjevo. This canyon hides numerous caves in which are housed colonies of bats protected by law. Although clean and beautiful, river Gradac could be contaminated. Experts warn that the cause of this is mostly human factor. The biggest polluter is currently railroad Belgrade - Bar, and an important factor of compromising the cleanliness and oasis of this river is unplanned deforestation.
Jerma represents the river, which in its course repeatedly crosses the border, breaks two mountains, and retains the unreal color and beauty. River Jerma originates near the Vlasina lake, near the municipality of Surdulica, and runs through Bulgaria, then returns to Serbia and flows into the Nisava. Strong Jerma broke its way through a Vlaska mountain and Greben mountain and thus created some wonderful natural landscapes. Jerma made two great gorges, named by the locals Odorovsko and Vlasko throat. The gorges until 1927 were completely impassable. Then for the needs of mine coal "Rakita" was pierced route narrow gauge for railway through the gorge. The mine was closed during 1960s and 1970s, and instead of stripes was made an asphalt road. This time, it provided the opportunity for nature lovers to experience the wild beauty of the Jerma and visit the monastery, which is located next to the river. Imposing cliffs and rare flora and fauna surrounding Jerma give special value to this river. This river is two years ago declared reservoir of nature because of all these characteristics.
River long as a year. Another name of the river Vrelo is “Godina” (“Year”), all because of its length. It is only 365 meters long, but in that length is collected everything that nature has to offer. The beginning and the end of the river are attraction for themselves. River springs, and after its short run flows into the Drina river by waterfall. Small, but straight regarding to all experts. It has a nice big spring from which water gushes off-white, on the left side of its bright brook is a tributary, but its natural environment is not missing. Boiling water comes from rainfall drained the vast plateau of Tara. The average yield of Perucac spring is 330l/s, while the average water temperature is around 10 degrees. River Vrelo is a clear, transparent river that by 10 meters high waterfall flows into the Drina. The spring is stocked with rainbow trout. In the hills and shores of the Vrelo river grow mountain-ash, sycamore maple, ash tree, elm, black elder, walnut... Pond is located on the right bank of the river, while on the left is town. River Vrelo, although one of the shortest in our country, can be proud of the two bridges. Vrelo is one on the shortest rivers in the world, and probably the shortest river in Europe. Drina river with a river Vrelo was declared as the first natural beauty of Serbia in the election campaign for Serbian seven wonders of nature organized by the Tourist Organization of Serbia.
Solotusa river is a river which is not much written or said about, however, to learn something about it you have to go personally to meet it. When you see photos of this beauty it will not be difficult for you to pay a visit to Tara to personally see and perhaps first make a record of the fabled river. Solotusa river flows through the hilly-mountain village Solotusa which is part of the National Park Tara. In the vicinity of the village there are various archaeological sites from the time of the Celts and Romans, as well as the medieval fortress Solotnik. When you go to get personally acquainted with this charming little river you will be able to make a small historical excursion.
